Damen Shipyards Gorinchem has been awarded a contract from the Swedish Coastguard in Karlskrona to construct two 80 metre multi purpose vessels. The contract covers design, engineering and construction of two vessels which shall be deployed by the Swedish Coastguard to carry out patrol duties, environmental protection and salvage operations. All with the aim to safeguard the Swedish coast against maritime hazards of any kind and nature.

Extensive oil recovery equipment shall be installed and the vessel’s performances are fully in line with the anticipated duties and according to the latest technology presently available. Particular attention has been given to the reduction of fuel consumption by applying a state of the art diesel-electric propulsion system with five generator sets and azimuth thrusters. Predominant patrol operations at reduced speed will result in considerable fuel cost savings.

Building of the vessels shall take place at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania, while Schelde Naval Shipbuilding will take care of the total contract management until final handing over. Delivery of both vessels is scheduled for April and October 2008 respectively and an option for a third vessel may be called by the client within the first stage of the contract.
