HHI opens block factory
Hyundai Heavy Industries has started to use its new shipbuilding block factory in Ulsan, which will supply 86,000 tonnes of blocks for ships this year. The 347,500 m2 plant is equipped to manufacture hatch covers and LPG tanks and, together with the outdoor areas and warehouses, will have an annual capacity of 110,000 tonnes of blocks or steel structures once the factory is fully operational.
The new factory will employ about 10 subcontracting companies with 800 workers, which is expected to boost local economy.
At the end of last year, HHI also opened a ship block factory in the nearby city of Pohang to cope with the increased shipbuilding backlogs.
