ASMAR builds Faroese trawler

The Faroese fishing company Hvalnes hf, which operates the pelagic vessels ?Christian ? Grótinum? and ?Nordborg?, has signed a contract for the largest and most expensive addition to the Faroese pelagic fleet ever. The new vessel is expected to cost $42 million.

The new ship, with a length of 86 metres and a beam of 18.50 metres, will replace the Nordborg and is designed as a combination of a pelagic trawler/purse seiner to catch herring, mackerel, capelin and blue whiting. The vessel will have 1,230 cubic metres of RSW tank capacity and 1,500 cubic metres of refrigerated storage space. The freezing plant will have a capacity of 250 tonnes per day, with factory waste processed in the 300 tonnes per day fishmeal plant.

Rolls-Royce is the main contractor, having supplied the design of the new vessel, as well as supplying the 8,000hp Bergen diesel main engine, the generators, steering gear, winch systems, control systems and thrusters. The vessel is being optimized for economic running at the design stage and has accommodation on board for a crew of 30. The new will be built at ASMAR in Chile and is expected to be delivered in the summer of 2008.
