Gelibolu ready for shipyard project

Studies have started for a shipyard construction project in ??anakkale’s Gelibolu district on one million square-metres of land in Cevizli Village. The proposed shipyard will be the biggest in Turkey and the Middle East. The project, to be built by a consortium formed by Turkish Union of Ship Owners president Å?adan Kalkavan, Yardımcı Holding Administrative Board president Kemal Yardımcı, Diler Holding boss Recep Sami Yazıcı and TOBB ex-president Fuat Miras, is expected to cost around $400 million, plus the price of land. The shipyard will provide employment for some 5,000 people and the first stage of construction will take about two years. The claim is that, once completed, the new yard will be able to compete with shipbuilders in Korea, Japan and China.
