Sea-Cargo orders LNG ferries

Multi-purpose ro-ro operator Sea-Cargo AS in Norway has placed an order for four cargo ferries powered by LNG rather than bunker fuel. They are believed to be the first of their kind.

In a statement the Bergen-based firm explained: “With focus on reducing exhaust emissions from short sea and coastal vessels, Sea-Cargo identified LNG as the future fuel of choice.” The vessels are due for delivery in 2009 and 2010 and will operate on a weekly service between the west coast of Norway, UK and the Continent.

They are 133 metres long, have a dwt of around 5,600 tonnes, a draught of 6 metres and are fitted with a 50 tonnes container crane. Compared to a similar ship using liquid fuel, CO2 emissions will be reduced by about 20%, NOx by about 90%, particulates will be negligible and sulphur oxide emissions will be zero.
