HHI develops worlds first WiBro shipyard

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is pushing to promote a digital shipbuilding yard by using WiBro, a wired and wireless communication service, at production sites for the first time in the world. HHI recently signed a contract with KT, Korea?s telecommunication service provider, at its Ulsan headquarters and agreed to complete the system by the end of August this year.

The WiBro system that HHI and KT will develop together is called ?W-Office (Wibro-Office) system,? a high-speed wireless data communications network exclusively designed for businesses.

In order to develop the ?W-Office? system, HHI and KT plan to install a wireless communication control station at a shipbuilding yard and optical repeater. Starting from September this year when the fully-fledged system goes into effect, the 5.94 million m2 shipyard will be connected to a wireless communications network.

Workers will be able to receive and send information such as data, visual and voice messages to others working in the communications center inside the company building in real-time with no limit of space via wireless mobile terminals. Should it introduce the system, HHI anticipates that it will become possible to promptly handle the operation in production, logistics and planning leading to an improvement in production and quality and a reduction in cost.
