Sustainable shipping nominations sought

The deadline for nominations for the Sustainable Shipping Awards 2009 is now just days away. The event will be held in London on 15 July 2009. Backed by BIMCO, INTERTANKO, RINA and the World Wildlife Fund, the awards ceremony will be compered by BBC environmental analyst, Roger Harrabin.

The Sustainable Shipping Awards will reward industry companies and individuals who have made significant strides to positively tackle environmental issues; the six awards categories are Marine Environmental Protection, Clean Air, Environmental Awareness, Sustainable Shipping Operator, Environmental Technology, and Green Initiative. Nominations simply require the submission of a 500-word summary by the 20 May 2009 deadline, which will be judged by a group of industry figures, including:

Niels Bj?rn Mortensen, Head of Marine Department, BIMCO

John Vidal, Environmental Editor, Guardian Newspaper

Jean Otto de Kat, Head of Innovation, A.P. Moller-Maersk

Vaughan Pomeroy, Technical Director, Lloyds Register

Dr Simon Walmsley, Head of Marine, WWF UK

Natalie Bruckner-Menchelli, Senior Editor, Sustainable Shipping

The winners will be announced at the ceremony at London’s The Tower, timed to coincide with the IMO MEPC 59 meeting.

The keynote address will be delivered by Jim Fitzpatrick, MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department of Transport.
