First examples ordered of new thruster

Berg Propulsion has signed a contract with Dubai Shipbuilding and Engineering to deliver the first two production units of the Berg Propulsion Azimuth Thruster (BAT) in early 2010.

The BAT is designed in-house by Berg subsidiary Berg Propulsion Technology. The design is derived from experience acquired by Berg Propulsion with its CP propellers and tunnel thrusters.

Prior to the delivery of the first two production units, Berg is delivering a full scale prototype that will be installed into a survey vessel in Sweden during June 2009 enabling the company to evaluate the design, manufacturing and installation process.

The first two production units, designated BAT 626, will use CP propellers and will be diesel engine driven. Each unit is designed for 1839 kw. They will be installed into a 63.5m offshore supply vessel with DP2 capability.

“This order is of significant importance for Berg Propulsion as it represents a breakthrough into a new market segment, for tugboats, workboats and specialised vessels. We can now supply a more complete propulsion package solution into the market” said CEO Aloysius Hendricks.

The BAT is designed for high performance and heavy duty operation. It will be available in both the CP and FP propeller versions and is suitable for either electric or diesel drives up to 2500 kw.
