HHI launches Korea?s first hybrid patrol vessel

Hyundai Heavy Industries recently held a launching ceremony for a 3,000 ton class patrol vessel named ‘Taepyungyang 9’ which is scheduled for completion in February 2010 .

The vessel is 112.7m long and 14.2m wide with a maximum speed of 28 knots. It is Korea?s first environmental friendly ship can use its electric motor instead of the main diesel engine when sailing at speeds below 12 knots.

The 750kW electric motor improves fuel efficiency and reduces vibration and noise. Traditionally, patrol vessels are powered by two 10,000bhp diesel engines. A few countries including the UK have this kind of hybrid vessel and HHI plans to build one more hybrid vessel for KCG for delivery in August, 2010.

The vessel is equipped with firefighting equipment able to spray 20,000 litres of water per minute. It will work for marine and coast patrol, rescue and protection of marine source and environment.
