China’s Taizhou Kouan Shipbuilding has reportedly secured an order for the construction of seven 27,000 dwt multipurpose cargo vessels from a domestic shipowner with delivery scheduled for 2011. Ship prices were not disclosed.

The shipbuilder also won a ropax ferry order from Guangdong Zhanjiang Shipping Group for delivery in 2010. The ferry will accommodate 45 vehicles and 900 passengers.

Taizhou Kouan is a private sector shipbuilder located in Taizhou city, Jiangsu province, and specialises in building handysize bulkers and feeder boxships with three 10,000 to 50,000 dwt building berths.

It started construction of its second factory Taizhou Catic Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in 2007 and completed phase-1 construction, involving building a 100,000 dwt size dock, in November last year. The yard plans to build 57,000-dwt and 92,500-dwt bulkers at the new facility which delivered its first newbuilding, a 57,000-dwt bulker, in July this year to Germany’s Ahrenkiel Group.
