Bangladesh shipbuilder expanding

Bangladesh’s Western Marine Shipyard is planning to construct its second domestic yard next year. The company is in talks with South Korean, Japanese and Danish interests over a $100m facility at Anwara. It already has a yard at Colagoan.

Boss Sakhawat Hossain says the new yard will build ships of up to 30,000 dwt.

“We have bought 54 acres of land to set up the new shipyard and dry dock,” he said. “We hope to clinch a deal with a foreign shipbuilder soon and start constructing the shipyard early next year.” It will have the capacity to build two large vessels a year, plus another 10 small ships, as well as carrying out ship repair
