China to build more shipyards in Zhuhai

In a move that defies logic given the current overcapacity in the shipbuilding industry, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the state-owned shipbuilder, is planning a major new shipbuilding facility.

CSSC plans to build a ship building and marine engineering base in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, with a total investment of CNY 43 billion ($6.3 bn).

Covering 1,660 hectares or so, the facility will have a total coastline frontage of 9,000 metres. The company is scheduled to construct eight large production lines of which four in the first phase will be primarily concerned with the manufacturing of high-tech ships and marine engineering equipment.
