Voith propulsion for Egyptian tugs

The northern Egyptian port of Alexandria is among the country’s most important trade ports in the region handling approximately 60 percent of all Egyptian imports and exports. The Alexandria port authority has contracted with the Egyptian Shipbuilding and Repair shipyard to provide two new VWTs.

The new vessels are designed to be equipped with two 28R5/234-2 Voith Schneider

propellers with a power output of 1,920 kW each. In addition, Voith will deliver

1330 DTL turbo couplings as well as an SBG 140 bow tooth coupling for the vessels.

The VWT measure 32m in length, have a width of 11.5m and a draught of 3.2m. Their maximum speed is 13 knots and, with their bollard pull of 55 tons, are well equipped for their tasks both within the port as well as on the Suez Canal. Both VWT will be put into service in

spring 2011.

The port authority of Damietta, close to Port Said, has also ordered two Voith Water Tractors from the Egyptian shipyard Timsah Shipbuilding. The Voith Turbo components VSP, bow tooth coupling and turbo coupling are identical on all vessels; however the VWTs for Damietta differ in terms of their outer dimensions.

They are 35m long, 11m wide and, with 2.65m, have a smaller draught. Both in terms of their maximum speed of 13 knots as well as in their bollard pull of 55 tons, they are identical to the port tugs for Alexandria. These two vessels will also be put into service in spring 2011.
