Perkins gensets power Greek ferry

Two 6TG2AM engines coupled to Italian-built Mecc Alte generators provide Konstantinos K with 104kVA continuous power, each of which can provide essential power to all of the ferry’s electrics, including air conditioning, electric motors, lighting and navigation equipment.

The new twin-deck, 102m long steel vessel was built for ferry operator, Salaminia Ferries, by Panayotakis Shipbuilding in Abelakia in Salamina. Currently the ferry is operated three or four days a week and, at present, the upper deck only is used for the ten-minute crossing, which provides Konstantinos K with a maximum vehicle capacity of 148 cars, although the lower deck is expected to be used during peak weekend and holiday periods.

The turbocharged six-cylinder, six-litre 6TG2AM is based on the Perkins 1000 Series engine and utilises the Perkins Quadram combustion system, noted for its high output, low fuel consumption and low noise level. It delivers a maximum net engine power of 101.5kWm at 1,500rpm and 121kWm at 1,800rpm.
