Scandlines orders two new ferries
The two 169m long, 24.80m wide ferries and the planned extension of harbour facilities represent an investment totalling Euro 230 million and will replace Kronprins Frederik and Prins Joachim built in 1980. The propulsion plant, comprising three 4,500kW engines, will drive a centre-line CP propeller and two 3.5MW azimuthing FPP wing thrusters, one either side of the main propeller, to provide a service speed of 20.5 knots. To assist manoeuvrability, especially in the small port of Gedser, two 1,350kW bow thrusters will be installed. This novel propulsion configuration also has clear advantages for efficiency and the environment.
In addition to the propulsion plant, the vessels will be fitted with two 4,300kW gensets, one 1,450kW auxiliary genset and a 450kW emergency genset.
The 2,900 dwt newbuildings will optimally utilize the dimensions in the harbour of Gedser and the hulls will be adapted to the requirements of the route. Bunker consumption and the emissions will be reduced as far as possible and the propulsion system of the vessels will allow adaptation to LNG as bunker fuel.
The optimum functioning of logistic on land is a significant success factor for the project and disembarkation and embarkation will take a maximum 15 minutes despite the doubling of capacity of the new ferries. The plans therefore also include new ferry piers with ramps in Rostock and Gedser. The ferries themselves will be fitted with a 10m wide bow visor and two 6m wide stern ramps.
