Online ECDIS training developed

Safebridge refers to the new requirements in ECDIS training from STCW 2012, the ISM Code and strict port state control regulations, which the company says make hands-on, type-specific training essential for today’s seafarers. Its system is claimed to offers students an intensive hands-on exercise of the navigation products installed on the ships they sail, independent of location. The online training portal will be available initially for various manufacturers’ ECDIS, with radar and other maritime training software to follow from 2012.

According to Safebridge, users can log on to the Safebridge server via the Internet to access a range of e-learning modes, including a guided tutorial on the live system, self testing with feedback and free play of the live system. After passing an interactive test the successful completion of the course will be documented with a type-specific training certificate on behalf of the manufacturer. Students will be able to put their new skills to work when they embark their ships.

Safebridge will launch its maritime online training portal in late summer 2011. Agreements have already been reached with bridge equipment manufacturers such as Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine, Transas Marine and Imtech Marine Germany, with more to follow. A further collaboration has been formed with MSG MarineServe, a maritime training company based in Germany.
