Finnish marine electrical order is worth over $40 million

The order comprises power generation and distribution systems, thruster motors, and two 6.5MW propulsion systems including drives and Azipod electric propulsion units. ABB says that its delivery provides powerful propulsion and manoeuvrability for the icebreakers and a reliable electric supply to ensure optimal availability and performance of all systems in the extreme arctic climate.

Designed for extreme environmental conditions in the Arctic sea, the vessels will operate in drifting ice of up to 1.7m thick and temperatures as low as -35°C. Both vessels are scheduled for delivery in the spring of 2013. Shipping company Sovcomflot will use the vessels to transport supplies to the Sakhalin-1 platform that will be developing the Arkutun-Dagi field off Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East.
