Two eco-bulkers ordered

Following on from MES’ best-selling 56,000dwt handymax bulker, known as the Mitsui 56 design, over 170 examples of which have been ordered, the new larger type of bulk carrier is expected by the company to establish a new segment in the market. Development was carried out alongside discussions with various owners and operators and investigations on more than 600 ports. The resulting ship has over-Panamax beam (36m) and shallow draught in accordance with prevailing trade patterns and the expansion of the Panama Canal in 2014.

Despite its larger deadweight and cargo capacity than Mitsui 56, the neo Supramax 66BC should achieve lower fuel consumption through adoption of a newly developed hull form and other energy saving equipment. The new design will, says MES, significantly exceed the expected EEDI restrictions and will provide owners with advantages under future environmental limitations. The two ships on order are to be chartered by a major European operator.
