World’s first ISO 50001 certification for shipping

The new ISO certification aims to assist organisations in achieving efficient energy consumption, creating transparency and facilitating and promoting good practice in terms management.

The ISO 50001, awarded to Stena’s ship management division, Northern Marine Management Ltd, will ensure that systematic monitoring and controlled use of energy is rigorously applied.

This will help to help optimise efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, save on costs and help to reduce the company’s environmental footprint.

Northern Marine Management joins only four other organisations in the UK to have acheived the certification – no other shipping company done so.

Philip Fullerton, technical director at Northern Marine Management said: “Achieving this new and high standard for energy management across the whole company is a key step for us in demonstrating that shipping is at the forefront of environmental responsibility.”

The certification builds upon energy practice already put in place by the company. Northern Marine implemented its first shipboard energy management plans on board its Stena AB vessels in 2005. In 2010, an environmental and energy efficiency rating scheme was implemented on five of the company’s ro-ro vessels.
