Transas to offer fuel saving device

Transas Wave display

Transas Wave is designed as a tool for monitoring and recording of ship’s fuel consumption. It is intended as a stand-alone application that can be fitted to any type of ship, though the company says that a future enhancement will be available later in the year in the form of an ECO module which Integrates Wave with ECDIS for route optimisation. Transas says that this module will allow ships to comply with forthcoming MARPOL requirements concerning recording and monitoring of vessels’ emissions.

Wave is installed on the bridge, and connects to the ship’s navigation sensors, fuel flow meter, engine data and emission sensors to collect information which can then be used to optimise the operation of a vessel. The company says that with proper control and management it is possible to improve engine efficiency, delivering fuel savings and reducing emission.

Because the system offers clear readings of both instantaneous fuel consumption and consumption over the distance sailed, it can aid in decision support. Fuel savings resulting from even small changes to speed, trim and planned route will be displayed, which Transas claims can lead to significant fuel savings. Applying all parameters available to Wave, the company believes fuel savings of more than 5% can be achieved, providing for a favourable payback period.

The display module offers a user interface comprising two large and eight small indicators, in different colours so important results can be highlighted, and allowing up to 10 graphs to be shown simultaneously. Individual voyages can be logged and played back, with data saved in various common formats for analysis purposes.

According to Anders Rydlinger, Transas Marine navigation product development director: “Change to a ‘green’ mindset is important. At Transas we demonstrate commitment to protecting the environment. Wave continues this concept and moves Transas to the very forefront of fuel saving technology making sure that our customers stay ahead of the wave”.
