Efficiency focus at Posidonia 2012

With persistently high oil prices and the burden of increasing emission regulations, it’s not news that the shipping industry needs new novel and sophisticated approaches to ship design and performance – including newbuild designs, ship conversions and macro level energy management strategies.

Namura, a Japanese shipbuilder present at this year’s exhibition, are near the end of a three year Green Ship Project designed to break new grounds in fuel consumption efficiency. “Every owner is interested to cut costs down so we are trying to brash up the standard design and develop new technologies that help reduce CO2 levels and fuel consumption by 30%,” said Kazutomo Taguchi, planning and development, Namura Shipbuilding.

The Japanese company has heavily invested in the development of new energy efficient designs that include higher efficiency propellers, electronically controlled main engines, improved superstructure shapes that reduce air resistance and rudder fins.

The exhibition aims to not only showcase new technologies, products and services, but also provide a critical insight into the key issues and recent developments affecting world trade and sea transportation – and how this affects the Greek economy.

Posidonia 2012 takes place at the Metropolitan Expo Centre in Athens from 4 to 8 June.
