Schottel adds rim thrusters to range

Importer
Schottel’s rim thruster will be made available from 2013

Benefits claimed include reduced noise and vibration, high efficiency, savings in space and weight as well as eco-friendliness. The company says that these requirements are particularly important for vessels operating in DP mode, or where comfort is of importance.

The SRT is available in four sizes, from 800mm internal diameter (200kW power rating) to 1,600mm diameter (800kW power rating). It is electrically driven, without the need for a gearbox and propeller shaft. The stator of the electric motor is integrated into the outer part of the tunnel. Blades are fastened to the inside of the rotor. It transmits electric power directly into propulsion power, avoiding transmission losses gear noise. The optimised hydrodynamic design with internal blades is claimed to reduce the risk of cavitation.

The unit is designed for robustness and ease of maintenance, with easily exchanged blade assemblies and water-lubricated slide bearings, easily accessible for maintenance. The motor is cooled by the surrounding water.
