Ecospeed for Staten Island ferry

The first Staten Island ferry John Noble was coated with Ecospeed in Connecticut last year, the coating has also been applied to one of the company’s fuel barges in Staten Island, New York. A third ferry will be coated later this year.

Typically, drydocking for these ferries and this type of work takes place off season when there are fewer passengers. The problem is though that the weather is often bad during drydock and therefore a quality paint job cannot be assured.

Once Ecospeed is applied however, drydocking is no longer such an issue. In-water maintenance to the coating can be carried out economically outside of drydock.

The coating itself does not need to be reapplied for the rest of the service life of the vessel. It works by reduceing added drag caused by marine fouling – by adjusting this cleaning interval, the fuel penalty resulting from biofouling is significantly reduced.
