Operation of Voith’s swing-out azimuthing rim-drive thruster

Voith claims to be the only manufacturer to offer a transverse thrusters using permanent magnet synchronous motor technology – otherwise known as rim drives – with power output of 1,500kW. The new VIP Swing-Out Azimuth thruster is a variant of the Voith Inline Propulsor which can be extended hydraulically from the vessel hull and can be turned lthrough 360 degrees once it has reached full extension. This design is said to be particularly advantageous for offshore vessels and others using dynamic positioning systems.

When used as an auxiliary propulsion system on large vessels, the VIP swing-out thruster is claimed to significantly increases vessel manoeuvrability and offer more precise control when entering and leaving port. Retracting the auxiliary propulsion units once the ship is sailing in open sea provides lower drag, offering increased speed and lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Voith says that its rim drive technology combines electric, mechanical and hydrodynamic elements and ensures low vibrations, smooth running, excellent hydrodynamic characteristics as well as an environmentally-friendly, compact and low-maintenance design.
