Cammell Laird goes for growth

The company undertook more than 180 marine contracts for commercial clients and the Ministry of Defence between January and June 2012. Managing director Linton Roberts said 2012 had seen the company complete contracts for more 40 marine clients. He said the work mainly focused on drydocking, repairs and maintenance. The vessels worked on included ferries, tugs, off shore support ships and tankers.

Mr Roberts said the company completed extensive work in the first half of 2012 for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) as part of its 25-year through life support contract to maintain 11 ships in the fleet. The company has carried out work for the RFA at shipyards elsewhere as part of the global reach element of this contract.

Another important order is building the flight decks for the new HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier. Five modules have been completed so far, and the remaining modules will be delivered later in the year.

Forthcoming work includes a conversion for the Orkney Islands Council ferry Hoy Head and the yard is building two new vessels for Western Ferries.
