Azipods for Russian icebreaker
The 25MW diesel-electric icebreaker will operate on the Northern Sea Route, the Arctic seas and estuaries of rivers discharging into the Arctic Ocean. The icebreaker will be able to proceed continuously both ahead and astern at the 2 knots in ice up to 2m thick with 20cm of snow cover and temperatures down to -35°C. The Azipod propulsion system is claimed to offer gains in energy efficiency, with up to 20% reduction in fuel consumption.
ABB’s scope of supply encompasses the integrated power generation and distribution systems, thruster motors, fire-fighting pump motors as well as the 25MW propulsion systems. The vessel features two Azipod thruster units each of power output 7.5MW and one centreline shaft with a FP propeller providing an additional 10MW output. All Azipod propulsion units for this project are specifically designed for extreme Arctic ice class RMRS Icebreaker-8.
