Star Bulk receives emissions measurement certificate

As phase one of the year long carbon emissions reduction plan, the company monitored its emissions in order to understand the carbon footprint of its fleet. Star Bulk conducted two full onboard energy audits to assess each vessel’s operational pattern and identify possible energy saving opportunities.

Star Bulk is now in the second ‘Reduction’ phase of the CPPS, monitoring the effectiveness of these measures to receive the Carbon Positive phase two certificate.

George Mantalos, technical manager, Starbulk, told The Motorship: “Reduce involves putting each of the specified technical and operational measures into practice to achieve emissions reduction. For us, this is a combination of both. We have installed PBCF (Propeller Boss Cap Fins) which has its own additional monitoring system, and we have upgraded all of the m/e by installing fuel valves and alpha lubricators. We are also using an intelligent weather routing system to generate further efficiencies this way.”

Helena Athoussaki, Carbon Positive, told added: “Now that Starbulk has established the carbon emissions baseline for each of its vessels, ongoing monitoring during the Reduce phase will record successful emissions reduction and ensure that its operations are becoming more energy efficient.”
