New MHI high performance propeller
The MAP Mark-W proposes to improve propeller efficiency by 5% for container vessels and MHI says it offres a potential fuel saving worth around $1million per year.
Historically, improving propeller efficiency and cavitation performance conflicts and it is hard to improve both performance at the same time. The new MAP Mark-W, however, maintains cavitation performance alongside improved propeller efficiency by improving its form of the tip of blades.
Additionally, MHI says that the MAP Mark-W improves propeller efficiency in all conditions, and it is claimed to provide optimal performance under slow steaming.
MHI also has an answer for minimising the initial cost for retrofitting to MAP Mark-W: it will buy a vessel’s old propeller.
Currently, six MAP Mark-W propellers are in operation on various bulk carriers and car carriers.
