Hansen-designed ferry for Ven-Trafiken

The new ferry called Uraniborg is a purpose made double end ferry with excellent manoeuvrability. It will operate between Landskrona and the Swedish island Hven in the Øresund. It will work the route in addition to the 22 year old M/S Stjerneborg.

Originally the vessel build contract was awarded back in 2008 to Spanish shipyard M.Cies in Vigo. But the work stopped and the contract was cancelled when the yard went bankrupt. In 2010, Ven Trafikken awarded the build to Danish shipyard Hvide Sande Skibs & Baadbyggeri.

And this is where Knud came onboard – the company is responsible for the basic design of vessels being built at the Hvide shipyard – this includes class drawings, general design of hulls, stability and outfitting and machinery systems arrangement.

Uraniborg has been designed as a double end passenger ferry and will also carry cars, trucks and cycles. It can carry up to 394 passengers and up to 14 cars, or a combination of two trailers and seven cars.

The vessel has two engine rooms – one at either end of the vessel. The two high efficiency azimuth thrusters have contra rotating double screw fixed pitch propellers driven by a high speed diesel engine.

Uraniborg measures 49.95m long and has a beam of 12m. It has a draught of 2.85m and a top speed of 11.5 knots.
