Nautical Institute launches security guide

The Maritime Security – a practical guide has been published to look at the threats to maritime trade, specific ship types and the principles and requirements of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.

Steven Jones, MSc BSC (Hons) MNI, author of the guide, told The Motorship: “The aim of writing this guide wasn’t just about providing lists of the rules in place, it was about providing masters, officers and crews, company security officers and shipowners with a little context of “why” they are making their vessels secure and guidance on how to actually do it.”

It also focuses on the practicalities of security planning, shipboard procedures and equipment and the ins and outs of making security work, including the use of armed guards.

Mr Jones added: “One surprising area of support has been from private maritime security companies. Many are buying the books to ensure that their teams are aware of the problems facing masters, and of the reasons why security may not always appear to be the number one priority as they juggle with the demands of safety and operational constraints.”
