The new vessel will be used for sub-sea research

The 84m vessel, which is currently being built at Simek’s shipyard in Flekkefjord, will be used for sub-sea research. It has been designed with a shallow 4.75m draft to allow close operation to the shore.

On the back of the performance of the PSV Stril Mariner, Simek chose Cummins marine diesel engines to power the electrical generators for this new vessel. The four diesel electric units use two QSK60 and two QSK50 engines to power two 1900kW and two 1343kW generators. The generators will also provide power for onboard services including an active heave compensated crane.

Sander Thorstensen, regional sales manager marine, Western Europe, Cummins, told The Motorship: “In addition to the delivery of four engines for the diesel electric propulsion (2 x QSK60 and 2 x QSK50), Cummins also supplied 1 x QSM11 for emergency genset. (272 kWe, 340 kVA). With the fully Cummins powered application, Møkster gets an environmental friendly solution with high quality, high efficiency and low cost of ownership.”

Cummins’ units will also power the vessel’s two 1600kW Azimuthing Rolls-Royce AZPo85 CP thrusters, giving the vessel a speed of 14.2 knots. One of the primary uses of the vessel will be as a launchpad for two ROVs. The Cummins powered generators will be key to the Dynamic Positioning (DP2) systems to allow the precise location and movement of the ROVs.

The vessel, which is yet to be named, will be classed by DNV and is expected to be delivered in May 2014.
