MHI releases 2012 construction figures

According to the results, MHI has seen a slight dip in the total number of vessels constructed from 19 in 2011 to 17 in 2012. MHI’s report compares the construction of Japanese and foreign vessels in 2012 to those in 2011 which was also an underwhelming year for the company.

The number of vessels constructed this year at the Nagasaki shipyard has fluctuated compared to 2011’s results, with a total of four Japanese vessels built compared to just one in 2011 and a total of six foreign vessels compared to nine in 2011.

MHI’s Kobe and Shimonoseki shipyards were down compared to 2011, when orders were low.

The company announced a significant decrease in orders for container carriers (zero compared to six in 2011) car carriers (four compared to six in 2011) and tankers (one compared to three in 2011).

But, it’s not all bad news as the Japanese shipbuilder has reported a rise in the number of orders for ferries (four compared to one in 2011) and ro-ro ships (three compared to two in 2011), so it appears to be holding its own in some areas.

Also, the figures do not include vessels built for the Japan Ministry of Defence and Japanese Coast Guard.

Unfortunately, 2013/2014 may be even worse for the company because of a lack of new orders which is affecting all shipyards globally.
