The car carrier 'Baltic Ace' sank shortly after the collision

The 148m car carrier collided with the container vessel, Corvus J, in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the North Sea. The vessel sank shortly after the collision, leaving 11 dead.

Rough weather and debris prevented divers from recovering the VDR capsule earlier. Technicians at Totem Plus are unsure whether the data in the capsule is intact. It has been handed over to authorities who will carry out a thorough analysis.

Merav Levy, marketing manager, Totem Plus, told The Motorship: “Analysing the data is carried out by the proper authorities, like Flag, and is very sensitive. It is likely to be presented at court and so is highly confidential. We will have to be patient and wait for the result of their investigation.”

Ms Levy was unable to provide any further information at this time.
