Offshore newbuild features first R-R unified bridge

The bridge, which Rolls-Royce says represents a step change in offshore vessel operation, simplifies and unifies the range of control levers, console panels and displays for the various onboard systems found in the ever-more complex modern offshore support ship. The bridge design offers enhanced ergonomics and simplified operation, for higher safety and improved efficiency. The layout can be tailored to individual vessel types.

The first installation will be on a PSV to the UT 776 WP wave piercing design, currently being built in Spain by Astilleros Gondan, with design, main systems and equipment provided by Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce says it has delivered advanced bridge solutions since 1998, and invested in human-centred research on vessel operations. The new bridge is based on the consolidated experiences of crews and researchers.

Anders Almestad, Rolls-Royce, president – offshore, said: “Working aboard ships in the offshore sector can be hugely demanding on crews, where concentration, visibility and rapid response are essential for safe operations. The unified bridge was developed after an in-depth study of bridge system requirements for the navigation and operation of vessels focused on human-centred design, safety, performance and simplicity.”
