Wärtsilä plans new factory in Brazil

The company is said to be investing some €20 million in the plant, which it says will be based on a multi-product factory concept for the assembly and testing of Wärtsilä generating sets and propulsion products. In the initial phase, activities will focus on medium sized, medium speed generating sets and steerable thrusters, with the possibility to flexibly expand the product range to respond to market needs. The new 4,000m2 factory, with its own quay, will be located some 300km north of Rio de Janeiro and will employ nearly 100 people. Construction will begin in April 2013 and the plant is scheduled to be fully operational by mid 2014.

“Wärtsilä’s global strategy is to be close to its customers. Our presence in Brazil is now further strengthened to respond to the ongoing demand for Wärtsilä power solutions, and to meet the set local content requirements,” says CEO Björn Rosengren.
