First MOL CADET container vessel calls at Tokyo

The programme, which was launched on 6 March 2013, covers safety education, basic/proficiency training and focuses on loading and discharging operations. It provides cadets (officer candidates) with tailor made guidance from expert onboard instructors based on a standard training programme that covers the skills required for their specific jobs.

Masaaki Nemoto, executive officer, MOL, said: “Safe operation is the core competence of the company and protecting yourself and protecting the vessel to lead to safe operation.”

On tankers, cadets will observe the operation of the cargo pump and valves, the loading and discharging operations of which require careful planning and high level safety measures. Onboard containerships, cadets will learn about on-site loading and unloading operations on tight minute to minute schedules, allowing cadets to experience front line operations on vessels in service.

Currently, six CADET training vessels are carrying out the programme, which MOL says it hopes to expand to other containerships and VLCCs.
