Kevin Taylor, general manager, Victor Marine, said to The Motorship: “This system is unique because it has a very small footprint which means more space in the engine room of a vessel. It can treat a large amount of fluid for its size.”
Mr Taylor added that the company is marketing the new system towards the influx of new vessels being built in India, China and Korea, rather than as a retrofit.
The STP system is designed in three stages, The BioReactor, the settlement tank and the chlorination tank.
The biological unit is designed on the principles of a Fixed Bed BioReactor (FBBR). Victor Marine’s new system uses the common trickling filter system (commonly used in land-based sewage systems) that is already well proven.
But the design has been improved by developing a better stationary support. The company says its specially designed filters can increase BOD loading by 50%. The system’s vertical flow media structure has optimal structure to expel excess sludge, crossflow structure to ensure no by-pass and better aeration. It also has a specially designed honeycomb matrix to increase the surface area and improve flow control to maximise reaction times and biological concentrations.
The system does not require additional pumping (only inlet and outlet) and all transfers are done by gravity or airlift, no additional energy is required so the energy consumption can be extremely low.
The chlorination unit is a tablet dispensing system. Once the treatment is complete, the fluid is pumped out and overboard through the de-chlorination unit to remove any excess chlorine as per IMO requirements.
Victor Marine manufactures these STP units in 15, 30 or 50 man units.
