Milestone for MAN engine

The milestone was reached with the order of two common rail variants of the engine by Saudi Arabia’s Huta Marine, as part of a diesel electric system.

The system will be used to power a self-propelled cutter suction dredger being built by a shipyard in the Netherlands, owned by the IHC Merwede Group.

MAN’s 48/60 medium speed engine is based on the original 48/60 series first launched in 1989. Since then, the engine has been in continual development. It was upgraded to a common rail fuel injection engine in 2008 and achieved full Tier II compliance in 2011.

More recently, it has had its cylinder head redesigned to improve atomisation resulting in improved combustion, reducing fuel consumption and emission levels.
