Second gas conversion for Rolls-Royce

The Rolls-Royce scope of supply for the conversion project, scheduled to be undertaken in 2014, includes two Bergen C26:33L6AG gas gensets, LNG fuel containment system, ACON LNG fuel and safety control system and all engineering required by Class and National Authorities. Rolls-Royce will also carry out an upgrade of electrical switchboards. The company says that the ship’s Norwegian owner, Bergen Tankers, is taking this step to provide a more environmentally-friendly and fuel-efficient ship as well as to ensure compliance with future emissions limits

Neil Gilliver, Rolls-Royce president – merchant said: “LNG is growing in popularity as a marine fuel, due to its environmental characteristics and lower cost than diesel. We’re delighted that Bergen Tankers has selected a Rolls-Royce gas system, which will deliver both reductions in emissions and significantly lower fuel costs. These are becoming increasingly important factors for ship owners as they look at future operations.”

Following the change, Bergen Viking will expect 25% lower fuel consumption as well as 85% reductions in NOx, reduced CO2 by 25%, SOx by 100% and particles reduced to almost zero.

Kjell Olav Haugland, MD of Bergen Tankers said: “For a relatively small ship owner, this change represents a significant investment. However with some financial support from the Norwegian government’s NOx funding programme, we are confident that the solution offered by Rolls-Royce will prove to be cost efficient for us.”
