First major cruise refit for fire safety system

The ship’s upgrade programme was completed in May at the Fincantieri yard in Trieste. Prior to the refit, the ship was known as Carnival Destiny. As well as a new fire system, work included new entertainment, dining and bar features, and an additional 182 staterooms, increasing the passenger capacity to 3,006.

The ship already had an Autronica BS100 fire detection system on board, which the company says made the upgrade to the later technology relatively straightforward. The refit re-used many of the detectors and loops already installed on the vessel and focused on the upgrade of bridge control panels to ensure availability of all features of the AutroSafe 4 system.

“AutroSafe 4 is one of the world’s leading fully addressable fire detection systems and is specified on a large number of new build ships of all kinds,” said Jon-Arne Simonsen, Autronica regional sales manager and application manager detection. “However, there is also considerable potential in the refit market, especially considering the current trend of passenger and cruise vessel owners focusing on investment in safety systems.”

Autronica says it is currently installing AutroSafe 4 on two car carriers in the Bahamas and China. The refits are similar to Carnival Sunshine, with installation of new fire detection control panels on the bridge and re-use of much of the existing detector network. Autronica is scheduled to complete AutroSafe 4 refit installations on two further car carriers for the same owner during summer 2013.

The company says that AutroSafe 4 is designed to meet all requirements in the high-end merchant, cruise and offshore vessel segments, and is certified according to European directives (CPD) requiring EN 54 compliance.
