New Daewoo vessel for Zodiac

Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries (DMHI) delivered the 8,600 teu, 116,079dwt CSAV TOCONAO to Zodiac Maritime UK Ltd.

It’s the first in a series of four containerships being built by DMHI for the ship operator.

The new vessel has a length of nearly 300m and a breadth of 48m. It has a maximum speed of 25 knots and is powered by a MAN B&W licensed main engine with 64,485hp.

The contract between DMHI and Zodiac was signed for the four newbuilds back in 2011. Two other vessels are due for delivery this year and the last vessel at the beginning of 2014.

Elsewhere, DMHI has also secured another important contract with a Greek owner for two new 9,100 teu containerships which will be delivered in the summer of 2015.

The company has previously specialised in building large containerships and bulk carriers but has recently started to diversify its portfolio in response to fluctuations in the global shipping market.

A first step was made to enter new markets last year when the shipbuilder secured an order for two 6,500 pure car & truck carriers. This was built upon in April this year when it won an order for four 112,000dwt product carriers.
