Norwegian Cruise Line chooses scrubbers for Breakaway Plus newbuilds

The two ships, scheduled for delivery in 2015 and 2017 respectively, will each have five scrubbers, catering for engines of between 14,400kW and 16,800kW. According to Green Tech, this will be the largest scrubber plant fitted so far to any ship, representing a total power of 76.8MW.

Green Tech has already delivered a scrubber for an NCL cuise ship: the Pride of America, which were fitted during the vessel’s drydocking earlier this year and will become operational in a few month’s time. The company says that using one small scrubber for each engine instead of a large multi inlet scrubber, and the fact that the scrubber replaces the silencer, allows a compact installation which avoids loss of cabin space or service areas. The GTM-R scrubbers will ensure compliance with the 0.1% ECA sulphur limit beginning in 2015.
