BIMCO ship efficiency package

The package consists of a supportive guide to efficient technologies publication and two day conference and workshop summit put together by UK shipping analyst Fathom Shipping.

The second edition of Fathom’s Ship Efficiency: The Guide is an independent evaluation of all ship fuel and emission saving technologies and uptake in the market, supported by BIMCO.

Catherine McMillan, director operations, Fathom Shipping, said to The Motorship: “The first edition was published in 2011 and since then we have seen a transition in the market to quick and guaranteed solutions such as propeller modifications, trim optimisation and retrofit technology.”

But the biggest market trend she says identified in the new edition is the uptake in ship to shore monitoring technology. “The move by owners and operators to monitor fuel and emissions in order to keep energy consumption down.”

Scrubbers and hull coatings have also come to the forefront over the last few years probably in line with regulation.

The trend towards more innovative self cleaning hull coatings is also clear probably in light of the TBT ban and in preparation of the market for more regulations concerning biocidal paints.

The next publication is due in 2015 and Fathom expects shippers to further embrace the digital monitoring packages available to them such as black boxes and fleet wide solutions.

“This will push more investment in clean technologies spurred on by legislation”, Ms McMillan said.

In short she said that as long as bunker fuel prices keep increasing so will the size of the Fathom efficiency guide, which this year is double the size of the first edition.
