Ten MAN diesels for cruise newbuilds
A five engine plant, all of type V48/60CR, rated at a total of 76,800kW, will be used for each of the two ‘Breakaway Plus’ ships, which are scheduled for completion in October 2015 and spring 2017. They will be the largest in Norwegian’s fleet, at 163,000gt and with berths for around 4,200 passengers. The design is a larger version of the 146,000gt Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway, which are each powered by four MAN V48/60 engines developing 62,400kW. The first of this pairwas delivered in April 2013 and is now in service, while sister ship Norwegian Getaway is scheduled for January 2014 delivery.
The Breakaway Plus pair’s engines will be equipped with MAN Diesel & Turbo’s common-rail injection system, claimed to provides superior performance in terms of fuel consumption and emissions.
