MTU’s 8000 receives NVR approval from ABS
The ABS NVR (Naval Vessel Rules) certification is a requirement for the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) programmes. It was awarded to Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen after 1,500 hours of testing of the 20V 8000, that included running at 110% of rated power in a variety of extreme environmental conditions. Additional validation testing was completed in a commercial marine application.
Since its introduction in 2000, over 200 series 8000 engines have been sold, mainly in military/governmental and superyacht markets, but also for passenger ferries and rescue tugs. The company claims this gives the 8000 a leading position in the market for engines in the 7,200kW to 10,000kW power range.
“The Series 8000 has an outstanding reputation in many naval applications around the world. The reputation is unmatched. Now this award ABS NVR confirms that we are top-notch with our Series 8000 engines,” said Knut Mueller, vice president sales governmental at MTU Friedrichshafen.
