Energy saving reefer design from Knud E Hansen
The Reefer Ro-ro design was developed in cooperation with Reefer Intel and Stena Roro, and follows two successful ro-ro and ro-con designs for CMN and Bahri. Reefer Intel is owned by. Birger Lindberg Skov, former president of Lauritzen Reefers.
The new design is aimed at the world-wide banana trade, and its optimization for slow steaming and use of ‘green technology’ for the machinery and onboard plant is matched by its use of ro-ro principles to save time and energy in port. Capital cost has been addressed as well, with a unit cost said to be 40% lower than a traditional reefer. Although 45% extra capacity is claimed, load and discharge can be achieved in 12h, compared to an average of 36-48h for conventional reefer ships.
