Hull stress monitoring for large boxships

UK-based Strainstall is part of the James Fisher group, and the system will be installed onboard an 18,000 teu ship, said to be one of the largest ever built, ordered from HHI by China Shipping Container Lines. Installation of the Strainstall system is scheduled for October 2014.

StressAlert continually monitors hull structural integrity while algorithms contained within the software enable predictions of hull status and deterioration to be determined. It is intended to enhance vessel safety due to a reduction in high stress incidences, enabling fuel savings and facilitating voyage management. The system provides instant access to the vessel’s hull stress status, whether derived from dynamic wave action or induced stresses from cargo operations, allowing the ships master to alter course and speed to reduce stress levels.
