Offshore operator opts for chemical-free water treatment

The two vessels, ordered from the Bergen Group Fosen yard, will use Enwa’s chemical-free systems for treatment of engine and HVAC water. Normally, in order to avoid corrosion, scaling and biofilm(bacteria), chemicals are added to the water. However, this is increasingly being seen as having the potential to cause environmental damage, as well as providing operators with a waste disposal challenge, and as an alternative the EnwaMatic system has been developed.

The EnwaMatic technology is said to combine reproducible principles of water chemistry with standard water treatment technologies. The treatment unit provides filtration and effective dirt and air separation with environmentally sound water conditioning, changing parameters such as pH, alkalinity and hardness, to elicit corrosion inhibition, control of scale formation and a biocidal effect.

The company says that the technology has proven itself on land, and has been tried by Volstad on the OCV newbuild Grand Canyon. It is said to be recommended by Wärtsilä for engine coolant treatment, and has been delivered for over 50 ships so far.
