Corrosion repair system fights underwater pitting

Ecofix is designed to be used in conjunction with the Ecoshield protective coating, and is claimed to be as tough as the steel itself, and machinable,. It is intended for repair of pitting or corrosion damage on rudders, stabiliser fins, thrusters and other underwater gear.

Rudders and other underwater items are subject to corrosion if not adequately protected, while cavitation damage can cause pitting. Ecoshield can, says the company, be used to restore steel to its original shape with a smooth surface prior to recoating. Bonding and hardness of Ecofix are both claimed to be particularly strong, and because the Ecofix filler uses the same basic resin as Ecoshield, the coating can be applied one hour after the filler with no compatibility issues. The system is said to provide an cost-effective alternative to metal facing or other fillers.

Ecoshield features a glassflake reinforced coating, suitable for protecting rudders against cavitation damage for the service life of the ship and comes with a ten-year guarantee. In conjunction with Ecofix it can be used on previously damaged or corroded underwater surfaces on stabiliser fins, thrusters and nozzles as well as rudders. Ecofix is claimed to restore surfaces where ineffective coatings have permitted corrosion and cavitation damage to occur, while Ecoshield will protect the area from subsequent corrosion and cavitation damage.
