MHI system for industry ‘first’

The system has been installed on a VLOC - an industry first

Installed on an ore carrier of Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), the system is said to significantly enhance power generation efficiency by maximising recovery and utilisation of exhaust gas from waste energy from marine diesel engines.

MERS is the system that optimally controls exhaust gas turbines and steam turbines, enhancing fuel efficiency by recovering waste heat at a wide range of engine load.

MHI says the latest MERS enables even greater waste energy recovery by incorporating shaft motors that deliver surplus power back to the main engines. As a result, the new MERS is said to reduce fuel consumption by around 8%.

MERS orders have increased since the system’s development in 2010, mainly for systems installed on refrigerated container carriers that consume large amounts of electricity.
